Does Washing of Feet save Christians

"So when He (Jesus) had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, 'Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; not is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, happy are you if you do them." (Jn: 13:12-17)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in this Forum,

Grace to you and peace from our Lord Jesus Christ, Halleluyah!

On Friday October 5, 2001 I attended the Truth Research Committee meeting which was held at the True Jesus Church in Garden Grove in California. The meeting was chaired by Pastor Derren Liang and very well attended by full-time ministers, an elder and deacons from various churches in the U.S.A.  The atmosphere of the meeting was good and discussion was balanced.

After the meeting some brothers and sisters asked me how it went.  I told them I would publish a short report in the ARK Forum.  You can find it in the attached file "Brief Report on Truth Research".  If you are interested in reading my research paper on "Research - Does Washing of Feet save Christians-2" (15 pages) you can also find it in the attached file.

Since most of you in the ARK Forum may not be interested in reading this kind of material please do what you like with it - ignore it, file it or delete it.  It's your prerogative to do what you like with it.  Can I request that you not to write and ask me any more questions on this subject please!!!  I need a break.

May God bless you.

Brief   Report  on  Truth  Research

Does  Washing  of  Feet  save  Christians?

Paul Wong

I would like to thank our Lord Jesus Christ and also the G.A. of the T.J.C. in the U.S.A. for inviting me to attend the Truth Research Committee Meeting at the Garden Grove Church on October 5, 2001.  One week before the meeting I had e-mailed my research paper on “Does Washing of Feet Save Christians?”  I gave my presentation and there was a discussion on this subject.  We also had a good conclusion with everyone in one accord, in unity and harmony.

During the discussion a letter was read out with the allegation that I believe “Washing of Feet has nothing to do with Salvation”.  That is not accurate.  My research paper states “Does Washing of Feet Save Christians?”  Those are two separate issues.  Once we sorted out the differences at the meeting we were able to come to a common understanding and agreement.

Salvation begins when a sinner or unbeliever accepts the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, believes in Him, calls upon Him, confesses with the mouth and believes that God raised Him from the dead, repents and confesses the sins and receives water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in His blood. The person’s sins have all been washed away.  He or she is saved at that point.  This initial salvation is also called justification, redemption or deliverance.

The newly baptized Christian needs to grow in faith and learn to be like the Lord Jesus Christ.  He or she needs to develop a strong Christian character.  Washing of feet helps the Christian to be like Jesus by following His example of love, holiness, service and forgiveness.  This phase is called sanctification and it helps to preserve the Christian’s salvation to the end (1 Thes. 5:23).

Two ministers brought out some significant truths that are relevant to the discussion.  Pastor G. H. Chen said that although washing of feet may not be a requirement for the initial stage of salvation but it is included in God’s total package.  I fully agree with him.  Deacon Luke Loh said salvation needs to be maintained throughout the Christian’s life.  Jesus said, “But he who endures to the end shall be saved.” (Mt. 24:14)  I have always believed and preached this truth.

After giving my presentation and discussion I was told to write a statement of my belief concerning washing of feet.  Here it is:

I am in full agreement with Article 6 of the Basic Beliefs of the True Jesus Church that is clearly written on page 591 of our Hymns of Praise that is published by the General Assembly of the True Jesus Church, U.S.A.  Here is Article 6:

“Foot-washing is a sacrament which enables one to have a part with (not in) the Lord, and teaches mutual love, holiness, humility, service, and forgiveness.  The foot-washing Sacrament must be performed in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ to all newly baptized members.  Mutual foot-washing may be practiced when necessary.”

The Truth Research Committee meeting was conducted in an orderly, cordial and dignified manner; and it concluded with a prayer.  Praise the Lord, HalleluYah.

May God bless you!
